Fire Lighting Information & Guide
As part of your winter stay and experience at Hidden Valley Forest Retreat we provide firewood in your chalet. . Please see below instructions on lighting your wood fire.
We encourage guests to be mindful of the usage of the wood provided in your chalet and therefore follow instructions below to make sure the wood lasts throughout your stay. We source sustainable firewood as part of our eco-friendly ethos at the retreat.
Each chalet will be provided with enough firewood for a 2 night stay and additional wood will be delivered between 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM for guests who are with us for longer. We asked that the cane baskets that the wood is delivered in be emptied and left outside for further deliveries.
The retreat is situated in a pristine forest bushland, collecting firewood from the property or forest is not permitted.
Fire Lighting Guide
Your fireplace will be ready upon your arrival and the flue dampener# fully open.
Light the fire lighters / paper that have been placed in the firebox
Adjust the door so that it is only open by about 1cm
Once the kindling has caught completely place a single log onto the kindling and allow to catch.
Once the log is burning add two logs and close the door and adjust the flue dampener halfway #
Adjusting the flue dampener will create a clean burning fire using minimal firewood.
If you would like the fire to still be burning in the morning prior to turning in for the night fill the firebox with wood and fully close the door and the flue dampener.
In the morning open the flue dampener fully and your fire should reignite
# The flue dampener is the sliding lever located at the top or side of the firebox which adjusts how much air can get in and hence regulates the rate and efficiency of burning.
# Firewood and kindling should not be collected from the forest and used in the chalets.
